  15. Wildcatting in The Coal Fields

  17. <p>    After smoldering in the coal fields of Virginia and West
  18. Virginia for two months, a strike by 1,500 miners against the
  19. Pittston Coal company flared last week into a fast-spreading
  20. wildcat walkout. More than 20,000 union miners struck in sympathy
  21. with the Pittston workers, shutting down mines in six states from
  22. Pennsylvania to Tennessee.
  23. </p>
  24. <p>    The Pittston miners worked without a contract for 14 months
  25. after the firm demanded cost-cutting changes in work rules and
  26. health and pension benefits. Last week United Mine Workers
  27. president Richard Trumka called upon other labor unions to support
  28. the strike. Speaking at a rally in Charleston, W. Va., attended by
  29. leaders of the airline-machinists and communications-workers
  30. unions, he said, "It's time that we stood up as a large family and
  31. fought back." But so far, it is mostly the miners who are aflame.
